Parenting is an invitation to rebirth your soul.
Raising children is certainly not for the faint of heart. Like it or not, our children bring out the light, and the dark, that we have been carrying around since our own childhoods.
Nobody could have prepared me for the ways that birthing my children into the world would also represent my own birth. Giving birth to a new identity was more grueling than giving birth to my babies! The pain of labor and childbirth comes to an end. But the birthing pains of becoming an entirely new person lingers for the rest of your life. The hardest part of raising my kids has been having to raise myself in the process. Now throw a puppy in to the mix, and some days we have a disaster!
Motherhood is a constant flow between becoming and unbecoming—becoming someone you never were before, and unbecoming everything you ever thought you were. It never ends. It’s the longest developmental period of a woman’s life. And like adolescence, it’s a defining period but also a tumultuous time characterized by uncertainty, surrendering, lots of praying that the world will be kind.
Parenting opens us up, exposing every facet of who we are, who we once were, and who we will be.
Raising children, while raising ourselves, is a spiritual rite of passage; one that offers parents an opportunity for deep transformation and transmutation that influences their own lives, and the lives of everyone around. It's what changes the world!
